I'm proud to present to you a very sharp dress watch from Girard Perregaux. This watch would look exceptional with a suit, when heading out for an evening function or meal.
This mid 1950's piece has its original box with a cream coloured exterior with wax finish. "Girard - Perregaux, Fine watches since 1791" is marked on the top in a gilt finish.
The interior has a satin cloth headlining. The area the watch rests on is flocked and has a pocket which you can insert the longer bottom piece of the strap into so that the watch sits elegantly inside. The watch sits on a crisp black calf skin leather strap, measuring 18mm lug width.
The case of the watch measures 35mm x 35mm which is larger than the traditional 33mm cases of the 1950s. It is also an incredibly slim watch at just 7.4mm in depth. The lug to lug measurement further contributes to the watches wrist prescence at a length of 42mm. The case is plated or "plaqued" to 20 microns of gold which provides a thick gold plate which stands the test of time. There is no wear to the plating which is a testiment to this and which means you can get the look of solid gold for a fraction of the price. There are only light surface scratches consistent with the watches age and no ghastly deep scratches. The stainless steel push on back has a serial number 81351422.
The stainless back has some scratches which are consistent with the watch having been opened using a blade. The dial of the watch has a finely brushed sunburst grain, radiating from the centre. This is silvered in its shade and responds excellently to changes in light. Girard Perreguex is signed on the dial underneath 12 o'clock. There are two gold baton hands that ozze minimalist style, with a cross hair subsecond marking and baton sub second hand.
Baton markers signify the hours, with two batons signifying 12, 3, 6 and 9. These further contribute to the simplicity and elegance of the watch.
There is some light patina on the dial where the hour markers sit. They have very lightly tarnished the dial over a spread of 0.15mm surrounding each marker. This patina is a gentle reminder that this crisp and well cared for watch, has its roots in the 50s. The acryllic glass has two shallow scuffs between 1 and 2.The glass is otherwise in excellent, unmolested condition. Inside, the watch is powered by a Girard Perregaux cal. 18 movement, which has its roots from the Peseux 330.
This is a 17 jewel variant, which is the mid range jewel count. It operates at a frequency of 18000 beats per minute and has a power reserve of 46 hours. The movement is very clean and un-scratched with the regulator in a neutral position. This is a very sturdy and reliable hand winding movement, with a higher than average level of quality. The movement keeps excellent time to within 60-70 seconds a day.
