A handsome piece of American Victorian silverplate by Rogers, Smith & Co. Of Meriden, Connecticut - one of the great names of the American plate trade, and part of the Meriden industry that later became International Silver. The form is a domed lift-off cover over a shallow footed base, flanked by two generous cast handles in naturalistic twig form, trimmed with applied flower rosettes.
Ornate floral repoussé runs in high relief around the band and across the dome - roses, blossom and foliage standing well proud of the surface, with a turned finial to the top. Clearly marked to the base within a shield: ROGERS.CT / QUADRUPLE, with the number 5003 stamped beneath. Quadruple plate was the top grade of the period, and the mark is shown in the close-up photos so you can verify it yourself. Victorian butter dishes were made for a moulded roll of butter presented whole at table, which is why they run considerably larger than a modern butter dish. It suits equally well as a cheese or preserve dome, or simply as a display piece. The piece has been left with its original patina rather than polished up.
