Vintage Silver Plate Axel Prip May or Maj Cutlery Set. This beautiful Danish cutlery set is in very good condition and features a simple but elegant design named Maj or May in English.
It was designed for Axel Prip and each piece has their mark of AP to the back. Other pieces have the later lighthouse mark used after 1928. The set is for 10 people and consists of 10 dinner forks, 10 entree forks, 10 continental soup spoons and 10 dessert spoons. There is no bubbling or corrosion to the plating. There are a few spots to the edges of the shoulders of the forks where there is thinned or no plating. We do see this on these earlier pieces and it appears to be something to do with the way in which the pieces were plated. There is no other plating loss. All the pieces have faint grey spots to the bowls.
It occurs on every piece, spoon and fork alike. We have not seen this type of marking before and are unsure as to what has caused this. The plating is still thick and shows no wear.
This is still a lovely Danish setting and is being offered at a bargain price. For Imperial measurement users a handy guide is 25mm or 2.5cm is a little less than 1 inch, so 100mm or 10cm is just less than 4 inches.
