Chinese Export Silver Tray Dragon Scholars Relief Engraving Qing 19th Century
Chinese Export Silver Tray Dragon Scholars Relief Engraving Qing 19th Century. Qing Dynasty (Late 19th - Early 20th Century). A superbly detailed antique Chinese silver tray, formed in a lobed flower-head shape with deeply engraved panels around the rim and a dramatic central dragon and flaming pearl motif. Each lobe depicts alternating scholars, birds, flowers, bamboo, and mythical creatures, all executed in high repoussé and chased work.

The central medallion features a powerful five-clawed dragon encircling the flaming pearl among clouds - a traditional Chinese symbol of imperial authority, wisdom, and cosmic balance. Surrounding panels present scenes of nature and literati life, including robed scholars in garden landscapes, flowering peonies and plum blossoms, bamboo thickets, and birds in flight. The tray is finely crafted, and the high-relief and precise chasing work suggest production by an accomplished workshop in the late Qing to early Republic period. Origin: China, Late Qing or Republic period c.

Shape: Lobed blossom form with deep relief panels. Decoration: Central dragon chasing pearl, surrounded by alternating panels of scholars, nature scenes, flowers, birds, and mythical beasts.

Back: Matching repoussé decoration to the reverse, centered with raised mounting point. Collector's Note: This piece combines multiple layers of symbolism - the dragon and pearl (power and wisdom), the scholar-figures (literati ideals), plum blossom (resilience), and bamboo (virtue). It exemplifies Chinese export silver artistry and cultural meaning, likely intended as a statement piece in a refined interior or scholar's studio.
