Gorgeous Antique Art Nouveau Silver Plate German Wmf Jungendstil Organic Tankard

Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a stunning antique German WMF Jugendstil Organic Art Nouveau silver plated 16.5 tankard, c.

Gorgeous cast silver (probably Britannia metal) baluster form tankard with 3-dimensional classic Art Nouveau design featuring cherubs playing musical instruments and nude and semi-draped maidens with gorgeous silver plated finish. Tankard stands on four racket form feet cast with grapes.

The domed cover is surmounted with large putto (cherub) figure holding a goblet with mandolin in his lap. The handle is formed from an angular vine. The tankard is in excellent condition with no noted damage or flaws. The silver finish has brilliant original luster with no rubbing to the finish. Measures 16 1/2" high, 9 1/4" wide (at handle) and 7 1/4 deep.

Simple, hand engraved 3-initial monogram C. " with date "1911 marked on base. The quality of this wonderful tankard is superb and it has amazing details in the casting. A similar example is illustrated on page 160 in the 1906 WMF Catalog reproduced by the Antique Collector's Club, Art Nouveau Domestic Metalwork from WMF.

The Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) Company was founded in 1880 in Geislingen, Germany. In the late 1800's, the company developed a special technique of silver plating that was considered the "perfect silver plate" using a technique that remained exclusive to WMF. Their silver plating process was patented in 1892 and by 1910 the company employed over 4000 workers. This tankard is absolutely amazing! You will definitely love this item.
