A magnificent and unusually large 13-inch (33cm) Anglo-Indian "Swami" plate, dating to the late 19th century. This is a superior example of Thanjavur metalwork, likely commissioned for a high-ranking official or as a prestigious presentation piece. Central Medallion: Features a deeply embossed, hand-chased figurative scene of Hindu deities in high-relief silver. The detail in the central figures is exceptional. Border: A complex "Swami" border consisting of multiple deity panels interspersed with intricate foliate and floral copper-work.
Quality: This plate exhibits the heavy gauge and "encrusted" metalwork style pioneered by the elite workshops of Madras such as P. It is a "three-metal" piece consisting of silver, copper, and bronze/brass. Condition Report: Fantastic Display Condition. The silver overlay is crisp, secure, and has not been over-cleaned. The face of the plate shows a beautiful, even tone. Crucially, the verso (reverse) remains uncleaned with its original 19th-century tarnish and patina, a vital indicator of age and authenticity for the serious collector.
Provenance: Acquired from a private collection in Northern Ireland.
