This very elegant silver plated articulated preserve jar bears the marks of the reputed and sought after Hukin & Heath. It was made circa 1898. The clear glass cylindrical body is mounted with a mechanical silver plated lid. The lid and swing handle enable the jar to be opened by simply moving the handle.
This very PROGRESSIVE MECHANISM was ahead of its time and created by Hukin & Heath in 1898, granted Patent No. 5518 and produced between 1898 and 1904. Hukin and Heath is renowned for its work with Dr Christopher Dresser in the formation of the Arts & Crafts movement (Art Nouveau). Their showrooms were described as being'redolent of art', and their products exhibited'grace combined with the useful, simplicity and purity of form with readiness of application to the purposes to which they are to be applied'.
This item is a superb example, being in immaculate condition and still very contemporary despite being over 200 years old. The glass is of great quality as is the lid and handle.
The combined weight is just under 500 gms. It measures 8.5cms high X 7cms square and 16.5cms high to top of the handle. Hukin & Heath's mark.
