SYRIAN BRASS PLATE, SILVER & GOLD INLAY, BIBLICAL JUDAICA, DAMASCUS EARLY 20TH C. This is a truly exquisite antique plate made in Damascus, Syria. The plate is made of brass featuring copper, silver and gold inlay designs. The plate features biblical scenes from the Old Testament, possibly King Solomon surrounded by men and animals. Made by Jewish craftsmen, this dates to the early 20.
This plate is a very fine example. The plates centre shows servants raising a man on a chair. The man, appearing to be King Solomon, is holding a sceptre.
The sceptre and parts of his headdress are inlaid with gold, while the rest is with silver. To his right are different types of birds, including a gorgeous peacock, as well as beasts. One of these is a lion who is guarding a group of men. The birds beaks and lions ear are inlaid with gold, which is really striking against the silver and copper. The men the lion is guarding are facing King Solomon. One man is seated while the rest stand around him in fancy garments. They all look to be of very high class, if not royalty. The scene is contained within a square panel whose edges are marked by thin lines of silver inlay. Outside of these parameters but before the plate starts to rise upwards are motifs of geometric patterns. The motifs could be interpreted as leaves but ultimately appear to be abstract. Regardless, they are wonderful and very detailed. Beneath the geometric patterns and the biblical scene is a background of tiny triangles. They are small enough that only when focussing on the plate their shape is revealed. The plates raised edge features scrolling images and Hebrew text. The Hebrew lettering is beautifully written and is placed within a panel of swirling silver inlay.
The images show interactions between people and animals. The animals include elephants, dogs, and birds. Interspersed between the text and images is the Star of the David inlaid with gold. The rim of the plate is lined with a repeating silver shape, each one identical to the last. The shape loosely resembles a water droplet, however, it is more likely that it is just supposed to be a nice-looking formation.
The back of the plate is without decoration. However, it is ornamented with a triangular peg.
This is intended so the plate can be hung on a wall. An incredibly detailed plate with amazing inlay! Judaic art at its finest. I have never seen one quite like this before.
