This high quality late Victorian English oak Tantalus comes with three cut crystal decanters. The locking mechanism works smoothly and each bottle has a silver-plated decanter label (GIN, WHISKY and SHERRY). Only the Gin label looks like a period label to me. The other two probably date to the 1940's or 50's. The decanters and the frame are original to each other and date to about 1880.

The oak frame is mounted with silver or nickel plated brass mounts including an unmonogrammed escutcheon. The decanters are great quality and quite usable but I have observed the following condition issues: two of the stoppers have damage at their bases (see photos); the neck of one of the decanters has been fractured and firmly reset (see photo); there is a chip on the outside of the lip of one of the decanters and there are two chips on the bottom corners of one of the decanters (see photos) and very minor chips on the lower edges of the of two of the decanters.

I have done the best I can to list everything but it's possible I might have missed some very minor issues. I think the nature of the tantalus is such that taking the bottles in and out of the frame inevitably results in at least minor damage especially as the evening wears on! The decanters are all about 9 1/8" tall and are 3.5" square at the base. The tantalus itself is 13" tall at the handle and 14" long x 5 1/2 deep. In my long career as an antique dealer I have only had three or four of these tantaluses so I know they are rare.

Also you usually find them with replaced bottles or missing bottles. The tolerances on the fit of the bottles is so close that it would be almost impossible to find replacement bottles that would fit properly.
