A very handsome Seamaster model, the gold plated stainless steel case has angular lugs with chamfered edges and the dial has a silk matt surface. The watch will be supplied in an Omega Service/Travel case. This Seamaster is a reference 14701 61 SC and it bears the serial number 1886XXXX which dates the watch to 1961. Reference 14701 was introduced by Omega in 1961 so this is an early version.
The movement is a calibre 562 which is seen by many as one of the most reliable, accurate and aesthetically pleasing movements that Omega produced. I bought this watch over 10 years ago but you could count the number of times I have worn it on one hand. It has been wound regularly however when I came to actually set it a few weeks ago the date would not set.I sent it off to an accredited Omega repairer (Robert Reeves) and it is now working perfectly again. It runs for a crazy amount of time after the slightest movement. Sadly the watch has lost its original buckle and if I was going to wear this watch on a regular basis I would be sorely tempted to invest in an Omega buckle. Case: The watch has obvious signs of wear and has not been polished.
The plating has worn through on the tips of the lugs which on this particular case come to quite an abrupt point. In some ways that is bad - the wear on the plating is going to be focused on that point however this is also a plus - the wear is restricted to a very small area. It is not easy to spot with the naked eye and I have had to re-take the photos three times to try to show the rubbing. You have to get just the right angle to be able to see it - it is one of those flaws that you really have to hunt out.Photos 11 and 12 are my best attempts. The watch is on the desk in front of me now, I know where the rubbing is and I simply can't make it out on any of the lugs. I guess it's because it's at exactly the point at which the light reflection should be changing.
Photo 1 sums this up. The case back has suffered normal wear plus one nasty scratch from a careless attempt at opening it but there is nothing that detracts from the fact that this is the classic Seamaster case back. The CB on the inside of the case back indicates that the case was made by Centrale Boites. Crown: I believe this is the original crown.
The plating is worn on its outer edges and on the Omega logo - nothing more than typical wear. The base metal is bronze coloured so it hardly shows.Movement: This model is powered by an automatic Omega calibre 562 movement with 24 jewels and precision regulation. Lever escapement, mono-metallic balance, 19,800 BPH, Incabloc shock absorber. The watch runs, sets and keeps good time. There is one TINY spot visible with the naked eye and no others even under a loupe.
The batons and logo are applied. Hands: again great for their age. Slight tarnishing evident under a 10x loupe. Glass: Not brand new, but in excellent condition.
Strap: the Lip padded strap is of a good quality and is marked'double cuir' leather top and bottom? The buckle is not original. Case, dial, movement and crown signed. Diameter excluding winding crown: 34mm.
He had done his stint in Switzerland and still had a lot of contacts there. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Registered Valuers and a Fellow of the British Horological Institute. I built up a good relationship with him and if there was anything wrong with a watch either mechanically or in terms of originality he would have spotted it and he would have let me know. I have tried to describe it as accurately as possible indeed to highlight flaws so that your expectations are met or exceeded when you see it'in the flesh'.
