Antique Art Nouveau WMF Twin Handled Silver Plated Centrepiece With Green Bowl Very Good Condition. Here for sale is a beautiful original Art Nouveau Silver-plated centrepiece with glass liner. Made by WMF (Wurttembergische Metallwaren Fabrik) of Germany.
It has the relevant Marks which dates it to around 1910. The case: Designed with a laurel arcaded pattern and twin swirl design handles, it is an unusual and rare piece. For use as a fruit, flower or salad dish.
The base metal is covered with Electro Plated Silver, the Silver is the standard thickness of I/0 which suggests 1 Gram of Silver to 1 dm2 or 100 square centimetres was used. I believe this good standard of Silver Plate was used for exports to the the UK and USA. The Silver Plate was initially oxidised to give a darker grey Silver patina (0X).
It measures 12" or 30cm wide and 4" or 10cm high including handles. 9" or 22cm wide and 3" or 7cm high without handles.
Base measures 7 or 18cm wide. The centrepiece is in very good condition with no dents. There are some small marks and fine scratches which is only to be expected with a piece of this age.
There is some silver wear near to where the handles are. The Liner: Made with a Emerald green cut glass which has a denticulated rim which reflects the shape of the base perfectly. It measures 8" or 20cm wide and 3" or 7.5cm high.
The liner is fully intact with no chips or cracks. There are a few scratches on the underneath. I have done my best to describe the piece, please look at the photos which provide a full visual description and show the small imperfections. Provenance: This piece belonged to someone i know who told me it was once his great aunts. This item is in the category "Antiques\Antique Furniture\Other Antique Furniture".
